Psyrri
Baba Au Rum.
Athens’ original cocktail bar, 400 rums, and the drink that started a city’s bar scene.
The bar that introduced serious cocktail culture to Athens when it opened in 2009, built around one of the largest rum collections in Europe — over 400 bottles. Consistently ranks on the World’s 50 Best Bars (#27 in 2025) and Europe’s 50 Best. No reservations, first-come-first-served, open nightly in Psyrri.
Baba Au Rum opened in 2009 when Athens barely had a cocktail bar to speak of. Bartender Thanos Prunarus built it around rum — a spirit that most of Europe was still ignoring — and stocked a back bar that now runs past 400 bottles. Over sixteen years the bar hasn’t moved from its spot on Kleitiou in Psyrri, and the drinks list has earned it a recurring place on the World’s 50 Best Bars (ranked 27th in 2025) and Europe’s 50 Best Bars.
The cocktail menu covers rum-forward classics and original house drinks built on the collection. The bar also serves tiki drinks, exotica-inspired concoctions, and seasonal specials using local Greek produce. No table reservations — the bar runs first-come, first-served — and the room fills most evenings, though the crowd tends to know what it’s doing.
Over 400 rums, no reservations, and a bar team that’s been doing this since before it was fashionable.
Psyrri has changed enormously since 2009, but Baba Au Rum has stayed consistent: a serious approach to rum and cocktails, a knowledgeable bar team, and an atmosphere that is both relaxed and focused. The bar opens every evening from 7pm, with Saturday sessions running half an hour later than the rest of the week.
