Heteroclito.

Greek wine without compromise.

Natural and low-intervention wine bar at Fokionos 2 and Petraki, two streets from Syntagma, since 2012. Over 200 Greek varieties, by-the-glass options rotating monthly, all staff with genuine knowledge of the list. The reference point for anyone serious about Greek wine — native varieties, organic and biodynamic producers, the full range from Crete to Macedonia. Simple food to match.

Heteroclito opened in 2012 in a small building on the corner of Fokionos and Petraki, two streets from Syntagma Square. The name means “irregular” or “unconventional” in Greek, and the wine list is built around that position: natural, organic, and biodynamic wines from Greek producers who are working outside the conventional appellation system, alongside a well-selected international list. More than 200 varieties are available, with by-the-glass options rotating at the start of each month.

The format is bistro-style: a small ground floor with a bar counter and a few tables, seating upstairs, and pavement tables outside that catch the afternoon light and hold the evening crowd well past midnight on weekends. The food is deliberately kept simple — cheeses, nuts, small Mediterranean plates — because the wine is the point, and anything elaborate on the plate would compete with it rather than support it.

Over 200 Greek varieties. Most of them you won’t have heard of. That’s the point.

What makes Heteroclito the reference point it has become in Athens is the quality of guidance. The staff know the list in the way that only regular tasting and genuine enthusiasm produces. Regulars who have been coming for years report being recognised after long absences. For anyone new to Greek wine — the native varieties, the producers working without intervention, the difference between a Xinomavro from Naoussa and one from Amyndeon — this is the right place to start and also, for the initiated, the right place to continue.
