Pangrati

Half Note Jazz Club.

Athens' home of jazz since 1978

Half Note is Athens' most celebrated jazz club — an intimate room in the Mets neighbourhood where international and Greek jazz artists have performed since 1978. From bebop to contemporary jazz, it remains the city's most enduring address for live improvised music.

Half Note opened in 1981 in a basement on Trivonianou, in the quiet Mets neighbourhood between Pangrati and the old Fix brewery site. For over four decades it has operated as Athens' principal venue for serious jazz — the room where both international touring acts and the best Greek improvisers come to play.

The format has not changed much. A low ceiling, close tables, a raised stage at one end. The sound is deliberately intimate — you hear the brushwork on the snare, the pedal on the upright bass. Drinks are served throughout; the kitchen offers a small menu on concert nights.

1981. The same Mets basement. Forty years of the best ears in Athens.

The programme runs from October to May, with a summer festival season. Past performers include Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Pat Metheny, and most of the significant figures in Greek jazz over the last four decades. Tickets go early for the better-known names.
