The open-air cinema under the Acropolis

Established in 1920, Cine Paris is Athens' most iconic rooftop open-air cinema — perched in the heart of Plaka with a direct view of the Acropolis. Now curated by Cinobo and ranked No.1 open-air cinema in the world by Time Out in 2026, it screens international arthouse and classic films under the Mediterranean sky.

Athens has been showing films outdoors since the 1920s, and Cine Paris — established in 1950 on a rooftop in Plaka — is among the last of those original venues still operating. The Parthenon appears over the right shoulder of the screen. It never fully disappears.

The programme runs from May to October and mixes new releases with a rotating selection of art-house and classic cinema. Films screen in their original language with Greek subtitles. Seats are simple wooden chairs with numbered cushions; a koulouri vendor still makes the rounds between reels.

The entrance on Kidathineon is easy to miss — a door in a neoclassical building, stairs up. Arrive early to claim a good sight line to the screen and, if the light is right, to the Acropolis.
