Exarchia

Wreck of Angels.

Rebetika in a basement on Stournari. It’s been there for years. That’s the point.

A basement rebetika bar on Stournari Street in Exarcheia. Live bouzouki most evenings. The music came from Anatolia with the displaced Greeks of 1922 and settled in basements like this one.

Rebetika — the blues of the eastern Mediterranean. The music of port workers, refugees, people who had lost something large. It came from Anatolia with the displaced Greeks of 1922, settled in Piraeus basements, moved inland. Wreck of Angels has been playing it live for years.

The space is small and fills completely. Friday and Saturday from 7pm until dawn: bouzouki, baglamas, smoke, and the specific feeling of being somewhere that doesn't know it's remarkable.

Rebetika in Exarcheia, which is the only kind of Exarcheia that matters.

No reservations. Show up, find a corner. Add Sunny Bar in Kypseli the same night if you want the full underground circuit. That is the correct order.
