Exarchia

Ama Lachei.

The mezedopoleio on Kallidromiou that doesn't need to try.

Ama Lachei sits in a converted neoclassical building on Kallidromiou, the main pedestrian street cutting through Exarchia. The menu is traditional — oven-roasted chickpeas, taramosalata, seasonal grills — and the crowd is local. Open from lunch until the neighbourhood winds down.

Kallidromiou runs the length of the old Exarchia plateau, and on Saturday mornings it becomes the neighbourhood's open-air market. Ama Lachei occupies a terrace directly on the street — tables spread across the pavement, umbrellas out, the ritual of the long lunch already underway by noon.

The kitchen follows the market: whatever came in fresh that morning shapes the daily menu. Pork braised with celery root. A dakos with heirloom tomatoes. Slow-cooked goat with trachanas. The dishes are honest and seasonal — this is not a restaurant that tries to explain itself.

The kind of place where the food is the conversation.

The wine list is exclusively Greek, leaning toward small producers from the mainland and islands. The crowd is local, the noise level rises through the afternoon, and the kitchen sends things out at its own pace. Reservations are recommended on weekends.
