Kalamida 11. A backstreet in Psyrri, the kind with murals on one side and a queue for a meze joint on the other. Walk past it once and you'd miss the door.
The building is 1881, an Ernst Ziller mansion — and Ziller's name carries weight in Athens. He designed the Stathatos Mansion, the Iliou Melathron (the Schliemann house, now the Numismatic Museum), the Royal Theatre, dozens of villas. The Greek Ministry of Culture has designated this one a Listed Building and a Modern Monument. The restoration was done in 2023 by Athens firm MPlusM Architects, who took the long view: preserve the frescoed ceilings, restore the original wooden staircase, then fold in muted Scandinavian furniture and a quiet contemporary calm.
Nine rooms in total — four rooms, five suites. Each one different. Restored frescoes overhead, limewashed walls in dusty pinks and stone greys, Persian rugs, bronze fittings. The Nidus suite has a private jacuzzi on a wooden terrace with an oblique line to the Acropolis. The Epos has its own veranda. Down in the basement: a wood sauna, a marble hammam, a cold shower, free with the room.
Book the Nidus if it's available. Eat at Linou Soumpasis & Co next door. Sit on the rooftop at dusk and watch Psyrri get noisy below.
