Ioannou Gennadiou is a quiet residential street in upper Kolonaki, lined with embassies and neoclassical apartment buildings. The Modernist opened in the former Canadian Embassy in 2020 — a property with the bones of something good: high ceilings, well-proportioned rooms, a residential scale that suits the neighbourhood.
The 38 rooms are designed around a restrained mid-century vocabulary — clean lines, quality materials, a deliberate absence of decorative noise. Natural stone bathrooms, considered lighting, beds with good linen. The aesthetic is modernist in name and in fact.
Kolonaki makes the least concession to tourism of any central Athens neighbourhood — serious restaurants, the city’s better gallery spaces, independent bookshops. The Gennadius Library and the National Gallery are within walking distance. For visitors who want a base that operates at a slower frequency than the historic centre, this is a considered option.
