Fresh Hotel.

Athens' first design hotel. Rooftop pool, May to October.

Central Athens' first design hotel, on the corner of Athinas and Sofokleous. A 2003 Tassos Zepos building with a new Paola Navone extension. Rooftop pool, Acropolis on the skyline.

"Athens’ first design hotel, opened 2003. The rooftop pool is still the best argument for Athinas Street."

Corner of Athinas and Sofokleous. The first design hotel in central Athens, back when central Athens didn't have any.

Designed in 2003 by Athens architect Tassos Zepos, nine floors and 133 rooms in a city that hadn't seen its own modernism in decades. The original was a manifesto for its moment — hot-pink Plexiglas reception, Philippe Starck chairs, all-white rooms, rooftop pool. Twenty years on, that original is still here, but the building has grown. The neoclassical mansion next door, long abandoned, has been folded into the hotel as a new wing by Italian designer Paola Navone and Athens studio OTTO. Old and new in the same property, the seam visible.

The roof is the constant. A small pool, May to October. The Air Lounge restaurant. A view straight at the Acropolis from a building most travellers never look up at. Psyrri starts at the door and runs in every direction — late-night Athens is here, not in Plaka.

The Standard rooms are tight. Book a Junior Suite in the new wing if you want space, or one of the rear rooms if you want quiet. Get to the rooftop before nine. The locals know it too.
