Pangrati

Vin d'Alsace

Kostis Karatzias pours only Alsace here — Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and more from small producers, by the glass or the bottle. A handful of seats inside, a few tables on the square, and plates built to go with the wine.

Syntagma

Oinoscent

One of Athens' earliest serious wine bars, in a high-ceilinged industrial space on Voulis with a generous outdoor area. Greek and international in genuine balance, scallops and lamb sausages to match, and staff who can guide a beginner and keep a collector engaged.

Philip Glass

Filippos Kouroudis's small room on Louka Bellou: around thirty labels, mostly Greek with a few from Italy and France, and a house wine made only for the bar with Tsimbidis Winery, a blend of Kydonitsa, Assyrtiko and Monemvasia.

Girafe Athens

Sommelier Vasilis Papadopoulos pours 135 labels from 18 countries, almost all by the glass through Coravin, on Exarchia's market street. Chef Panagiotis Vasilatos cooks with the wine in mind: tacos, fish and chips, arancini, boards sliced to order.

Koukaki

Fysika Athens

A natural wine bar on a corner of Dimitrakopoulou with a loyal following: skin-contact whites, light reds, pét-nat, and staff who will steer you somewhere interesting if you let them.

Syntagma

Heteroclito

A small bistro-style bar on the corner of Fokionos and Petraki: natural, organic and biodynamic wines from Greek producers working outside the appellation system, more than 200 in all, with the by-the-glass pours changing each month. Simple plates, pavement tables late.
